The HSE have once again issued a further Safety Alert reminding all interested parties - designers, manufacturers, installers and property owners - that they must take urgent action to prevent pedestrians from becoming trapped in electric gates.
This month’s alert follows a similar notice issued in February following the deaths of two children who were crushed by electric gates in separate incidents.
While the police and HSE investigations into both deaths continue, the HSE expects interested parties to address this matter and have issued a detailed notice as to what they expect to be done.
Do you know the difference between a safety alert, safety notice or a safety bulletin issued by the Health & Safety Executive?
One of these is used to notify people about major faults that could result in a serious or fatal injury and requires immediate action.
One is used either to implement a change in procedures or where action needs to be taken to improve the level of protection or instruction in a potentially dangerous situation, e.g. where instructions or labelling are not clear or additional guarding may be required. These notices do not require immediate action but must be acted upon within a reasonable time.
The other is a general term used to cover both types of safety message.
The HSE use various means to issue safety messages, some of which require more urgent attention than others. If you don’t know the difference between them, you should consider speaking to Crown House, our health and safety division, to discuss what action you need to take.
